The county department of energy, wildlife and tourism carried out civic education on conservation of natural resources in Mandera North, Mandera West and Mandera South sub-counties. The chief officer, Mr. Matker Mohamed Noor led officers from the Kenya Wildlife Service and other officials to visit Rhamu, Malkamari, Dandu and Chachabole community wildlife conservacy.

Mr Matker decried the massive deforestation in Lafey and Mandera West sub-counties adding that the department has embarked on afforestation program in Mandera, Rhamu, and Takaba, Elwak, Banisa and Lafey towns. "The department is carrying out sensitization campaign on importance of protecting our environment. “I appeal to the residents to stop the massive deforestation we are witnessing as it degrades the environment, “said Mr. Matker. The absence of regulatory authority such as National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) has fueled illegal charcoal burning and quarrying businesses in the county.
